Indulge in a little too much beer and barbeque this summer? Feeling sluggish and need a pick-me up?

A detox might be just what you need. In fact, detoxes are pretty popular around here, so we’ve decided to do one together. Starting September 22, about 15 people—you could be one of them!—will be following a 10-day detox till October 1.

The detox will include MediClear (which you can purchase from us), a tasty drinkable powder you can make into a smoothie, as well as diet guidelines, recipe suggestions, and answers to the questions you might have. At the end of the 10 days, on October 1, we’ll celebrate our mini renewal with a fun potluck lunch here at the QNC at 1:00pm. Each person is asked to bring whatever they loved eating the most during their detox.

With allergies becoming more rampant and the burgeoning influx of disease, dietary changes have become necessary for numerous people. The world is also realizing that diet is directly related to conditions such as Tourette’s and autism and diseases thought to have no way of curbing them. Poor or improper diet is even directly related to behavioural issues in children.

Mostly, the dietary changes require people to eat less or no wheat, dairy, or sugar. In general, this plan is okay for everyone. However, if you don’t suffer from any complaints, a good rule of thumb for prevention is to eat organic where and when possible, and whole, fresh foods.(Think Jamie Oliver!)

These days with our busy schedules, cooking is often set aside in favour of processed foods, or eating out. Eating out can make healthy eating very challenging, but there are a few better options to choose from than. We’ve found at least one restaurant in the area that serves fresh, organic food. There are also vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Daizies is located on 74 King Street West, in Cobourg, and is a clean, bright, and refreshing take on restaurants. Besides meal options, they also carry various smoothies, nice for a pick-me up while touring the pretty town of Cobourg or going to the waterfront nearby.

We’ve eaten at Daizies, and can report that the food was not only delicious, healthy, and well presented but also worth the prices we paid. There’s a great menu to choose from, and everything is prepared with obvious care and served in a timely and friendly manner. There’s even a patio where you can sit outside to enjoy your meal.

Daizies was started by Kim Miller who, upon becoming burnt out and seriously ill, was forced to make dietary and other health-conscious changes of her own. Doing her research led her to a philosophy—basically, you are what you eat— that she discovered she wanted to share with others, along with her love of cooking “and delighting friends and family with delicious meals that not only taste great but also have mind and body benefits.” Miller knows the importance of good-quality, fresh, and organic food, combined with exercise and a balanced outlook.

Check out Daizies’ website for more information, or better yet, decide on a day out to Cobourg and treat yourself to a delicious, guilt-free meal! If you know of other restaurants you’d like to recommend, don’t be shy! Tell us in the comment section below.
