Indulge in a little too much beer and barbeque this summer? Feeling sluggish and need a pick-me up?

A detox might be just what you need. In fact, detoxes are pretty popular around here, so we’ve decided to do one together. Starting September 22, about 15 people—you could be one of them!—will be following a 10-day detox till October 1.

The detox will include MediClear (which you can purchase from us), a tasty drinkable powder you can make into a smoothie, as well as diet guidelines, recipe suggestions, and answers to the questions you might have. At the end of the 10 days, on October 1, we’ll celebrate our mini renewal with a fun potluck lunch here at the QNC at 1:00pm. Each person is asked to bring whatever they loved eating the most during their detox.

Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? Call or email the office to let us know, or visit us to add your name to the sign-up sheet.

No doubt you’ve noticed by now that the mosquitoes are out in full force. This hampers camping and field trips and discourages people from sitting outside during the evening hours to enjoy supper or the fireflies in the grass.

Although the market is flooded with all sorts of mosquito and other bug repellent, most of it contains DEET and other harmful chemicals that are much worse than a mosquito bite! These chemicals are readily absorbed through the skin and end up toxifying our organs and taxing our immune systems.

So what about effective natural solutions? Well, we’ve got them!

Nature’s Formulae Citronella Supreme Mister and Citronella Supreme Lotion are all-natural and packed with the essential oils of citronella, bergamot, lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus, and leleshwa, perfect for keeping those pesky bugs at bay.

The first week of May 2010 marks this year’s Naturopathic Medicine Week. In honour of the special time of year, we are hosting Torontonian Victoria Yeh, author of Where Do I Start? Your Essential Gluten-free, Dairy-free, and Sugar-free Food Allergy Cookbook.

Ms. Yeh, who made the transition to being gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free for health reasons, understands that the diet changes are not only drastic but potentially difficult, and offers easy and delicious substitutes to give guidance. Often, when people hear they must alter their diets in this way, there is great hesitation and a feeling of loss as well as confusion. Where to start and what to eat will be covered in this hour-long seminar.

WHEN: May 5, 2010, 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm. Please email or call 613-966-9660 to confirm which session you’d like to attend and to reserve your spot. Attendance is free, and Victoria will be selling her cookbook as well. You can also visit Victoria at her websites Gluten-Free Living and Gluten-free Living Blog.

Have you ever looked at the lists of ingredients that are in your makeup or skin care products? If so, you likely didn’t recognize many of the ingredients, and the list, if they provided it, was probably extensive.

The shocking information about these lists is that they are mainly toxic chemicals. And the skin, as one of the largest organs on our body, is highly absorptive. Over 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream and can build up in our tissues, causing us to become toxic and ill.

Below is a list of some of the most prevalent ingredients found in mainstream “natural” skin care products.

Benzene: known to be carcinogenic. Usually a trace element and not often on the list of ingredients, but use the product enough and it becomes irritating to the mucous membranes and poisonous when ingested.

Bismuth Oxychloride: by-product of lead and copper refining. A heavy metal; heavy metals are associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

DEA (diethanolamine): synthetic solvent, detergent and humectant widely used in brake fluid, industrial degreasers, and antifreeze. Harmful for liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Also avoid TEA and MEA.

Parabens: synthetic compounds used as a preservative in most beauty products. May be listed as methylparabens, propylparabens, butylparabens, and ethylparabens. Maybe cause allergic reactions and skin rashes and have been found in breast cancer tissue.

Phthalates: research has shown that “this preservative is an endocrine (hormone) disrupting chemical that can cause reproductive defects in the developing male fetus and cause early puberty in girls.” -Alive Magazine, Sept. 08.

Propylene Glycol: main ingredient in antifreeze and brake and hydraulic fluid. Material safety data sheets warn users to avoid skin contact. Studies report that it can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

Sodium Laurel Sulphate/Sodium Laureth Sulphate: originally invented to clean garage floors. Linked to cataracts and can be carcinogenic. Rapidly absorbs into body and may cause hair loss.

Please note: many of the mainstream brands out there touting their stuff as natural or mineral still contain parabens and other chemical ingredients. Unfortunately, the majority of them are not purely natural or healthy.

Studies have shown that about 7 million Canadians suffer from allergies or allergic illness, and the number is steadily growing.

Allergic reactions are the immune system overreacting to allergens — for example, food, pollen, grass, weeds, dander, etc. — that trigger symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, runny eyes, stuffy nose, coughing, and itching. Asthma, hives, hay fever, seasonal allergies, and eczema are all examples of allergy disorders.

Contrary to what many people think, allergens aren’t the cause of allergic reactions or symptoms. They are simply triggers. Allergic reactions are usually due to an imbalance in the body, such as intestinal disorders, too many toxins in the body, a weak and toxic liver, a high acidic pH, and poor diet.

How Can You Decrease Your Allergic Reactions?

In light of the above information as to what are the root causes of your reactions, here are several things you can do to lessen your allergic reactions:

  1. Avoid mucus-forming foods, e.g., dairy, bananas, or sweets;
  2. Balance the immune system in the digestive tract with probiotics;
  3. Check your pH and avoid acid-forming foods;
  4. Have your adrenal glands checked by a naturopathic doctor;
  5. Have your toxicity level checked by a naturopathic doctor.

How You Can Relieve Your Allergy Symptoms: Supplement Spotlight

There are effective alternatives to medication for treating allergy symptoms. One such remedy is homeopathic, called Pascallerg, by Pascoe. Pasallerg has proven effective for decades in treating the following allergy symptoms: hay fever, asthma, allergic skin reactions, and food intolerances. It has no negative side effects and is safe for all ages above 1 year old.

Pascallerg is effective in preventing and treating seasonal allergies but also other allergies. It can be taken preventatively up to three times a day. For acute relief it can be taken up to 12 times daily.

For more information and to confirm whether or not this supplement is the best course of action for you, consult a naturopathic doctor. If you’re local, contact us at 613-966-9660 or using the form on our contact page here on the site.
