Articles arguing about the value of organic foods abound: some state organic is worth it, while some say not. Our reasoning here at the Quinte Naturopathic is that organic is good (no pesticides, herbicides, hormones, steroids, etc., really is better!). Even better, though, if freshness is a concern, is buying both locally and organically.
While several organic farms exist throughout Belleville and the surrounding area, we are familiar with and recommend one in particular. Maple Crest Farms, owned and run by Shawn and Maya Milne, is located 10 minutes east of Belleville. Backed by a long family history of organic farming, Shawn and Maya have been dedicated to producing chemical-free, certified organic beef, chicken, eggs, grains, soy, and vegetables since 2003. With high ethical standards and under the Pro-Cert Organic Systems stringent certification requirements, the Milnes raise their animals on their organic produce as well as free from hormones, steroids, and antibiotics.
Buying locally and organically is one important step closer to optimizing your health and supporting your community. Maple Crest Farms food is available at the Belleville Farmer's Market from May through October. During the winter months they offer free local deliveries of meat orders over $50.
