5 easy (and tasty) smoothie recipes you should try

Author: Dr. Michelle Durkin on 13 June 2017

Smoothies are one of my go-to breakfasts that are quick and easy especially when I'm in a rush to get out the door. Over the years I've reduced the amount of fruit that I use and increased the amount of good fat and protein. By doing so it has really improved my blood sugar balance and instead of getting hungry at 10 am and needing a snack, or part of my lunch, I don't get hungry until 1pm.

They are also one of my weight management secrets because they make it easy and convenient to add medical foods.

This includes Ultra Meal 360 (for weight loss, insulin resistance & high cholesterol), Ultra Glucose Control (for sugar cravings and weight loss), SynerClear or UltraInflamX360 (for leaky gut syndrome, digestive conditions and weight loss), or Ultra Clear Renew (for fibromyalgia, detoxification and weight loss).

So if you have been prescribed a medical food OR you just want to start using smoothies for an easy go-to breakfast like me, here are five easy and tasty ones I think you should try:

Iced Coffee Protein Shake

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (or medical food)
  • 2 cups ice

Cocoa Almond Smoothie

  • 2 or 3 large ice cubes
  • 1 1/4 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted almond butter
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Blueberry Nut Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 raw Brazil nuts
  • 4 raw walnuts
  • 4 ounces non-GMO silken tofu (or medical food)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1-2 ice cubes

Dr. Kelly Brogan's Brain Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  • 8 oz coconut water or filtered water
  • 3 tbsp collagen hydrolysate
  • 1 tbsp nut butter or sun butter
  • 3 pastured egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1-2 tbsp ghee or butter
  • 1-2 tbsp raw cocoa powder

Apple & Cinnamon Smoothie

  • 8 oz coconut water
  • 4 raw almonds
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 chopped apple
  • 1 scoop protein powder (or medical food)
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed

Now I would love to hear from you! What is your favourite thing about smoothies? Do you have a smoothie recipe you would like to share? Leave a comment below and I'll be back next week with another edition of Doctor as Teacher Tuesday!

Im wandering ab out your opinion on the ketogenic diet is it just another fad diet and is it safe

Dr Michelle Durkin ND

Hi Craig,
It depends on the person. I would not prescribe a ketogenic diet for someone without doing an initial consultation.

What about coconut milk instead of almond milk in the coffee smoothie?

Dr Michelle Durkin ND

That would also work Laurraine 🙂
