Today’s post comes from a new series I have written to help people create health instead of fixing disease called an Apple a Day. If you want to sign up for this series please see the link at the bottom of this post.
It's time to talk about something that makes people a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time gives us great insight into our health.
I always see patients start to squirm a little bit when I start asking questions about this - that's right, it's your bowel movements.
Did you know that squatting is the most anatomically correct way to go to the bathroom #2?
By squatting you relax a muscle called the puborectalis. There is less straining, less wiping, and better emptying of the bowel.
So how can we accommodate this effectively in the modern age of indoor toilets? Introduce the Squatty Potty.
One of my patients re-introduced this to me this year and I immediately remembered first hearing about it on an episode of Two and a Half Men. Believe it or not they even sell it at Costco!
Check out the hilarious marketing video from Squatty Potty to learn more. Warning!! This video may not be suitable for all audiences.
Now I would love to hear from you! What is one thing that has helped your bowel movements become easier? Leave a comment below and I'll be back next week with another edition of Doctor as Teacher Tuesday!
